The final paragraph of McCarthy’s story seems to combine elements of the fantasy and pastoral genres. The narrative voice seems distanced and the fish appears almost magical. It seems significant that the author chooses to end his story with such a celebration of nature. Is this the resolution that we would expect? In many ways McCarthy overturns the genre expectations of his sci-fi dystopia. The narrative voice is subtly different to what we have encountered previously. On the other hand, perhaps McCarthy has been writing a pastoral all along – and it is the setting that we should view at the centre of this story.
